Intracranial hypertension

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 9:30 am

Intracranial hypertension
Intracranial hypertension is the common name give to disorders caused due to blood pressure that affects the cerebrospinal fluid pressure within the brain. This is an uncommon disease. It may be found affecting 1 in 100,000 people. The intracranial hypertension is found mainly affecting women. The onset of this disease can be approximately considered to be in the late 20s. This occurs suddenly and the cause goes unclear. Occasionally, it is associated to brain tumors. The common symptom for intracranial hypertension is severe headache. Such headaches do not get relieved with anything and leads to vision disturbance as well. Apart from this intracranial hypertension also causes loss of concentration or memory, dizziness, disorientation, pins and needles pricked feeling in the hands and vomiting. The diagnosis of intracranial hypertension is done by scanning the brain and by measuring the pressure of CSF. Based on this CSF pressure, the treatment varies. The medical treatment includes drugs such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors taken in high doses. This is done to suppress the CSF production. This may have side effects and if some medical therapy happens to fail and your vision is at risk, then two types of surgery can be undergone to rectify. The first type of surgery is done by opening a nerve sheath. This is done to lessen the swelling and the second type of surgery is the neurosurgical shunt. These tubes are embedded so that the CSF gets drained into another cavity like abdomen. The intracranial hypertension occurs when the fluid is under severe pressure. The brain area is filled with fluid like water and if much fluid is present, the pressure increases owing to lack of space for expansion. The causes are yet not fully diagnosed but for some clues. Mostly, pregnant women experience such blood pressures and this worsens owing to weight gain. However, intracranial hypertension is caused owing to weight gain and any disorder blocking the spinal fluid flow in the route of the blood and the brain caused raised pressure. Such blood clots drain the brain causing elevated intracranial pressure. This leads to severe blood pressure levels. This can also be caused due to steroids withdrawal or owing to intake of considerable Vitamin A. even steroids for body building and other drugs like tetracycline also enhance the possibilities of increasing the blood pressure. Blood pressure can be controlled and intracranial hypertension can be accomplished by monitoring the blood pressure and following the medications so that the effects are minimized.

While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed. Heroin is commonly recognized as an extremely addictive prohibited sedative narcotic. It is a drug which is extracted from the seeds of poppy plants extracting from Morphine. Heroin is frequently brown or whitish in colors, which has a very huge market value. Heroin is frequently cut with inexpensive still compounds to make the most of earnings for merchants, comparable to cocaine. For cutting heroin, Starch, Sugar, powdered milk and even quinine are all frequently used. This ambiguity for all time surrounds the limpidness of heroin is the reason for a lot of victims that result from the overdose of heroin. A lot of heroin addicts use the drug administered into vain to reduce squander, even though this way of deliverance has few intrinsic troubles. The danger of transmission of hepatitis, infection, HIV or AIDS and other virus that are contagious by blood can simply happen among users of heroin. Frequently this happens because of unsanitary equipment and sharing of needles, thus prompting many administrations around the globe to initiate exchange program of needles. Nowadays the drug emerges to be snagging a travel on the croak tails of drug clubs and continues to be fairly popular, which is the reason for a massive segment of drug addicts. 2.4 million Americans have used heroin at some point in their lives with a sizeable number claiming to have used the drug at least once in the past month was estimated by the national household survey on Drug Abuse. Alternatives to antidepressants medications
Antidepressant medicines are one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. This is because these days, a lot of people face problems that they have ever encountered. All this stress and depression calls for some entertainment and relaxation. It is difficult for a person to get some relaxation as everyone is very tightly packed with his own schedule. So, they switch over to antidepressants. These are medicines that are specially made for reducing the amount of depression that they face in their daily lives. The effectiveness of these medicines is not something that can be guaranteed as their effectiveness varies from person to person. Having the prescription of a doctor is always best as there is a chance that a different antidepressant could produce any undesirable side effect. There are three types of antidepressants. All the three types of antidepressants stimulate and regulate the neurotransmitters. This causes a shift in the mood of the person as the neurotransmitters regulate mainly various moods, appetite and even sleep. Though Tricyclics and MAOIs were the first antidepressants, but they caused some very serious side effects. These medicines were found to burn the receptors present in the brain and so doctors prescribe only a small portion of these drugs. Childhood bipolar disorder

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 11:55 pm

Childhood bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is a serious psychological disorder which falls under the category of Mood disorders. Bipolar disorder involves the recurrence of mania, depression and/or mixed episodes which are extreme forms of otherwise normal mood changes that people experience. Bipolar disorder also results in sudden and abnormal shifts in mood, energy and behaviour to the extent that normal functioning is hampered. Though the onset of Bipolar disorder is considered to be from late teenage to early adulthood, there are cases where the onset of Bipolar disorder is in childhood. Though childhood Bipolar disorder involves the same episodes of mania and depression, the manifestation is in behaviours different from adults. When experiencing a manic episode children are more likely to experience irritability, be more aggressive and be prone to destructiveness instead of feeling elated or euphoric. Similarly during a depressive episode children may manifest the feeling in a number of physical complaints like headaches, stomach aches, muscle aches etc. They may also be constantly tired and drained. All this results in frequent absences from school and poor performance in class. Children in a depressive state also talk of or even try to run away from home, avoid social interaction, have poor communication skills, be very irritable and be very sensitive to failure or rejection of any kind. All the studies done on Childhood Bipolar disorder indicate that Bipolar disorder that begins in childhood is very likely a different and more severe form of the adult-onset Bipolar disorder. With Childhood Bipolar disorder a characteristic feature is a continuous and rapid-cycling mixed state showing symptoms of both mania and depression. Another feature unique to Childhood Bipolar disorder is that the condition very likely co-occurs with other behaviour disorders which can be quite disruptive to normal functioning. These behaviour disorders which exist along with Childhood Bipolar disorder include Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). Sometimes the symptoms of Childhood Bipolar disorder may be confused to be some other condition. This is in contrast to adult-onset Bipolar disorder which often starts with a classic manic episode and is less likely to co-occur with other conditions. It is important that parents, teachers or any other caregivers in the child’s environment be aware of the symptoms of Childhood Bipolar disorder as well as symptoms of other childhood behavioural disorders. In case of any child who seems to be depressed and demonstrates ADHD-like symptoms along with unusual mood changes, it is important that a preliminary evaluation be done by a mental health professional like a psychiatrist or psychologist. It is essential that this evaluation be done because the medication often given for ADHD tends to worsen manic symptoms.

Age-related alopecia

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 10:35 pm

Age-related alopecia
Japanese scientists may have been able to unlock the typical causes for age-related alopecia. Many people when they are faced with the point of losing their hair, often times deal with it. Society has come to know baldness as a means to signify that they are getting older. However, no one has to deal with losing their hair regardless of what age they are. The scientists were able to run certain tests on mice to see if they could come up with a solution to this age related dilemma, and allow people to keep their hair for elongated periods of time. Researchers have already cam to realization that the hair is maintained through something that is referred to as a cyclic process. Every piece of hair is grown from a hair follicle or the root. As many people are well aware, the hair that you actually see is actually dead. The only thing that remains alive is the root or the follicle of your hair. You can find the root of your hair by looking directly at your scalp. The root is what is underneath the layer of skin on your head. The root is what causes your hair to grow in the first place. Japanese scientists compiled a room full of mice and performed different tests on them. The first test allowed them to recognize the cause of the mice losing their hair. It appeared that after the scientists mixed together a particular chemical compound the mice began to lose their hair 11 days later. The hair loss quickly progressed over their entire bodies, until all mice were nude in appearance without one inch of fur. The mice even lost their whiskers from being tested with this particular compound. You are probably wondering what the scientists actually gave their mice patients that allowed them to lose their hair at such a rapid pace. Well, the scientists gave their mice subjects the Sox21 gene. The scientists found that the mice that had an extra layer of oily skin actually began to lose their hair at a slower rate then those who did not. Scientists came to the conclusion that there is something in this gene that causes hair loss in humans. However, we now know how it is caused but many people would love to know how to fix it. Age-related alopecia may seem like a disease that takes over your body. Men and women both experience this sudden hair loss when they make it to a mature age stature. Right now there is no cure for this baldness; there are alternatives that you can try such as hair implants and other sciences that have come out to try to make the transition as easy as possible. As far as a magic pill that you can take to turn back the hands of time, scientists are still working on that.

History of acupuncture

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 10:20 pm

History of acupuncture
Acupuncture is a
fascinating method for curing various illnesses. It may seem like
merely placing some needles at specific points on the body but
acupuncture has a fascinating history as well. The history of
acupuncture can be traced even to the Stone Age. Sharpened stones
called as Bian Shi were used for acupuncture in China as early as
during 3000BC. There are also archaeological evidences that suggest the
application of acupuncture during the Han dynasty. Korean literature
describes about traditional Korean medicine that used a system called
as chimsul. This method is important even in Japan where it is famous
as Kampo. Shen Nung, the father of Chinese medicine, is the first
person who theorized about the circulation within the human body.
These theories were made about 5000 years ago. It was these theories
that lead to the formation of acupuncture. Shen Nung proposed the idea
of Qi. Qi is an energy that flows through the human body through
certain specific channels that are called as Meridians. The theory
proposed by Chen Nung stated that if the flow of Qi to the different
parts was interrupted due to some reason, then it resulted in certain
illness. He also stated that this can be cured by regulating the flow
of qi. The history of acupuncture relates that Shen Nung observed that
to have an orderly flow of Qi, certain points in the body that the
Meridians come into contact with the skin surface should be
manipulated. Such points should be accessed through needles insertion
into the skin and this practice is called as acupuncture. However,
hundreds of contact points are present in the human body and the
needles are inserted depending on the ailment. In-depth diagnosis is
done to locate the points where Qi gets obstructed.
Initially, the treatment of acupuncture was remained unacceptable even
by the Chinese communist party. They even agreed it to be superstitious
and irrational. They also viewed it as a hindrance to the progress of
science. In 1950, Chairman Mao united western medicine with Traditional
Chinese medicine officially and this brought significance and
prominence to acupuncture treatment. The acupuncture gained importance
in the USA in early 1970s. The US president Richard Nixon visited China
and was amazed to see acupuncture being used to cure serious ailments.
This was practiced only in the Chinese communities and the person
administering the acupuncture had learnt it from their forebears. Then
onwards, acupuncture played a significant role in the medical system of
china. Although, today acupuncture is modernized, it can never lose its
identity of being related to a philosophy instituted thousands of years
ago.
